At PP PEPPER, we are proud to bring you one of the world’s most exceptional spices Penja Pepper. But this pepper is more than just a seasoning; it’s a story of passion, terroir, and history. Today, we delve into the origins of this “white gold” from Cameroon.

The First Seeds: A Banana Planter’s Vision

The story begins in the 1930s with a man named Antoine Decré. A banana planter by trade, Decré had a vision to diversify the agricultural landscape of the Penja region. He imported the first Piper nigrum plants from India and established a pepper plantation nestled near the fertile slopes of Mount Cameroon, an active volcano. The unique microclimate, abundant sunshine, and tropical rainfall created the perfect conditions for this new crop to thrive.

However, patience was key. The first commercial harvest did not happen until 1958, yielding a modest 40 kg of white pepper for export. This small batch marked the humble beginning of an extraordinary journey.

Gaining Recognition: From Local Secret to Culinary Treasure

This exceptional pepper quickly captured the attention of connoisseurs. It became a well-guarded secret among top chefs in European grand restaurants, who prized its unique aroma and complex flavor profile. Despite this elite recognition, Penja Pepper remained largely unknown to the general public for decades.

Inspired by its success, other local farmers began cultivating pepper, initially selling it in local markets. The real turning point for exports came in 1995 when shipments to France began, officially introducing Penja Pepper to the international gourmet scene. Pioneers like the PHP company (Compagnie fruitière), Paul Breton, Dick Scott, and Erwann de Kerros played crucial roles in developing and promoting the pepper industry in the region.

A Landmark Achievement: The First Protected Geographical Indication in Sub-Saharan Africa

The true recognition of Penja Pepper’s uniqueness came with the precise delimitation of its ideal territory—defined by its specific soil, temperature, humidity, and altitude. This led to a historic milestone in 2013 when Penja Pepper became the first Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in Sub-Saharan Africa, registered by the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI).

This was not just a local accolade. In March 2022, the European Union registered “Penja Pepper” as a PGI, solidifying its international status. This recognition confirms that Penja Pepper possesses specific qualities and a reputation exclusively due to its geographical origin, protecting its name and legacy on the European market.
