Frequently Asked Questions

Your Guide to Penja Pepper

What makes Penja Pepper so special and different from other peppers?

Penja Pepper is an exceptional spice due to its unique Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) terroir. It grows on mineral-rich, volcanic soils at the foot of Mount Cameroon, benefiting from a specific microclimate. This combination results in a complex aroma and a remarkable length on the palate that cannot be replicated elsewhere, making it the pepper of choice for Michelin-starred chefs.

Why don't you sell pre-ground pepper?

We are committed to delivering the full, unadulterated aromatic experience. Grinding pepper releases its essential oils, which evaporate quickly, leading to a significant loss of aroma and flavor. By providing only whole peppercorns, we guarantee that you enjoy the peak quality and complexity of Penja Pepper with every grind.

What does the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) certification mean?

The PGI certifies that Penja Pepper has a specific geographical origin and possesses qualities strictly linked to its terroir. It was the first PGI in Sub-Saharan Africa (awarded in 2013) and is also recognized by the European Union. This certification guarantees the authenticity, quality, and traceability of the product, protecting it from counterfeiting.

How does PP PEPPER support local communities and sustainable practices?

Our model is built on fair trade and direct partnership. We buy directly from small-scale local farmers at a fair price, eliminating intermediaries. Our approach is agro-ecological, promoting biodiversity preservation and sustainable development. This supports the livelihoods of dozens of families and ensures the long-term health of the land.

How should I store my Penja Pepper to maintain its freshness?

For optimal preservation, store all dry peppercorns (black, white, red) in a tightly sealed container, in a cool, dry place, and away from direct sunlight. Green pepper in brine must be kept refrigerated after opening. We recommend using a pepper mill and grinding only the amount needed just before use to preserve the full aromatic profile.

Can I use Penja Pepper in desserts and sweet dishes?

Absolutely! Penja Pepper is a fantastic way to elevate desserts. Its complex aroma, especially that of White Penja Pepper, pairs exquisitely with dark chocolate, fruit salads, poached fruits, and even certain custards. The pepper adds a subtle warmth and depth that enhances the sweetness, creating a sophisticated and unforgettable gourmet experience.
